If you listen to the radio at all you have probably heard those OnStar commercials where they play live calls from people using OnStar in an emergency.  But, maybe you haven’t noticed the disturbing escalation of the emergency calls they are choosing.  That’s why they pay me the big bucks.  I notice these things.

The original commercials usually had a recording of some “funny” problem where someone locked their keys or cellphone (or dog) in the car.  It was all laughs and harmless anecdotes.  It made you feel good inside.  Then all of the sudden the people down at OnStar apparently got restless.  Out went the lighthearted commercials and in came the steadily increasing tragedy.

Guess What? I'm Coming To Town To Yell At You

Guess What? I'm Coming To Town To Yell At You

My dislike of being yelled at in the morning has been well documented in this space. With Doug and Wolf as the only local morning sports-talk radio hosts available to me it seemed like I’d be stuck forever getting screamed at in stereo by a pair of complete idiots.

Thus imagine my surprise this morning when I’m flipping through the dial.  Oh, there’s Doug and Wolf screaming about Anquan Boldin on KTAR, Dan Patrick somehow mugging through the radio on 910, and on 1060…Arnie Spanier? I recall Spanier from his national radio days on Sporting News radio. For those of you unfamilar with Spanier, read his wikipedia. Anything jump out at you?

His nickname is the Stinkin Genious and is well known for his gravelly voice, yelling and love of the Mets and Arizona (college).

That’s right. Yelling.  So if there were even a remote uncertainty as to what Spanier was hired to do for 1060, such debate can now end.  He’s here to yell, so brace yourselves Valley radio fans.  I suppose the worst case scenario is I can now choose to get yelled at in the morning by just ONE complete idiot.  Little victories.

Please stop yelling at me. Every weekday morning I get up, get ready, and hop in my car for the 35 minute commute to work. As I sit in traffic, bracing for what will likely end up being a long day of being pulled in 10 different directions, I’d like to be able to listen to some calming level-headed local sports analysis. As for Mike Jurecki, the guy just provides meat and potatoes analysis, which is an appreciable trait in morning talk radio.

I Will Yell at you

I Will Yell at you

As Will I

As Will I

So when Bickley and MJ announced they were moving to drive-time a little part of me died. I’ve always been annoyed with Doug & Wolf…and now they were my only morning option for local sports talk.
