Coach Bill Fuller of the Deering Tornado’s Former NBA player and coach of the New Mexico State Aggies and Sacramento Kings Reggie Theus is set to interview with USC. Theus was 41-33 with the Aggies and 44-62 with the Kings, and nothing says dedication to running a clean and winningprogram like hiring a guy with a losing record as a coach overall. Apparently, the Trojans have decided that perhaps they need to replace men’s basketball coach and big money baller cum USC recruiting violations fall guy Tim Floyd with a guy whose most successful coaching experience came on an NBC Saturday morning sitcom.

USC Paying Players? Say it Ain’t So!

Yahoo Sports once again reveals that USC is up to its usual douschebaggery. They are reporting that USC men’s basketball coach gave at least $1,000.00 in Family Dollar gift certificates cash to a man named Rodney Guillory, to acquire the services of former Trojan OJ Mayo. Guillory reportedly lavished Mayo with gifts and helped steer him to USC and to Bill Duffy Associates sports agency after college. A one time Mayo confidant, has told NCAA investigators and federal authorities – including the FBI, IRS and U.S. Attorney’s Office of the payments. USC was already under investigation for the over $100,000.00 in improper benefits Reggie Bush received while at USC. But based on the gutless way the NCAA penalizes programs larger than SMU it is likely USC will receive nothing more then a slap on the wrist and the temporary suspension of Pete Carroll’s twitter account.
The victim in all of this? OJ Mayo. Based on the previous precedent of the Reggie Bush payments, Mayo was worth way more than than Tim Floyd paid for him. Either Tim Floyd is a Gordon Gecko type hard driving business man or Mayo was represented by the same guy who negotiated for the Native Americans and agreed to give land to Europeans in exchange for small pox infested blankets. Either way, Mayo got ripped off.
Nomad QB Transfers to ASU

Michigan sophomore quarterback Steven Threet has announced he will transfer to ASU in the fall. Under NCAA rules he must sit out the 2009 season before competing for the starting job in the 2010 . ASU fans welcome this news following the departures of Jack Elway and Chasen Stangel from the team, but they should be highly skeptical of Threet despite his Michigan pedigree. Actually, they should be highly skeptical BECAUSE of Threet’s Michigan pedigree. Threet will not become the next Jake Plummer or Andrew Walter. He is more likely to be a new Rudy Carpenter, sans the talent.
Can you be the next Rob Johnson?

A number of sports-related phenomena never fails to amaze me. Included on this illustrious list is the staggering ability of NFL Draft prospects to increase their stock, sometimes by a number of ROUNDS, based solely upon the NFL Draft Combine, university-sponsored Pro Days, and individual workouts. The latest such prospect, and perhaps one of my favorites, is USC QB Mark Sanchez. A few short months ago Pete Carroll, who probably knows a little more about football than I do, was advising that Sanchez remain in school for his senior year.
Now all of a sudden this guy is supposed to be a top 5 pick (Seahawks at 4 is a strong possibility) all because of how good he looks in a pair of shorts? Don’t get me wrong, I refuse to deny how good Sanchez looks in said shorts (see sidebar) – The guy has steamy Latin looks rivaled only by a circa 1994 Antonio Banderas. But as you’ll see below USC QB + NFL hasn’t exactly been a formula for success. (more…)
