As you all know, there have been an inordinate number of notable (and bizarre) deaths in the last few weeks.  In keeping with the recently popular death tributes here at SoD, I wanted to celebrate a death that some of us remember quite fondly.  The death of disco.  It was thirty years ago last Sunday that disco died at a Chicago White Sox game in center field of Comiskey Park.  The ensuing riot caused the  White Sox to forfeit the second half of the day’s doubleheader.  It remains the last American League game to be forfeited.

Pay particular attention to the local Chicago news guy and his interview of disco murderer, DJ Steve Dahl.  (Between 3:14 and 4:00 on the clip below)

Late June through early August has to be the slowest and most boring time of year in sports.  No NBA, NHL or NFL to speak of and two-thirds of the MLB teams are already out of contention for the playoffs.  Which makes the unlikely parallel of top stories featuring U.S. Open champ (F)Lucas Glover (please no more “it fits like a glover” headlines, I beg you) and retiring NFL veteran La’Roi Glover stand apart from the rest.

In any other time of year, I wouldn’t notice the fact that two men with the same last name made headlines on the same day.  Unless of course it was something as earth-shatteringly important as Bryant Gumbel and Greg Gumbel agreeing to star in a live action version of “Gumbel to Gumbel: Beach Justice.”  We can all dream, can’t we?
