Loyal readers of this blog know that I’m currently in Singapore – which for those of you who don’t know how to type “time in singapore” into google, is 15 hours ahead of Arizona time. As this is a sports blog and you likely care very little (to none) about my other experiences – and trust me there have been very few – I’ll give you a taste of some of my sports related experiences:
- I saw cricket batting cages along with a pickup game of cricket. I’ve not been to the inner cities of LA or NY lately so I’ll just make the assumption that this is the way the United States is since I’ve left. I welcome your confirmations.
- In the window of a store there was a Chicago Bulls shirt that was red with gold glitter and had faux autographs from members of the early 90’s Bulls – including Bill Cartwright, Trent Tucker, and John Paxson. Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen were nowhere to be found. Somehow I resisted the urge to drop the seven Singapore dollars it would have cost to purchase this luxury item and will likely forever regret not owning what I believe was a female shirt with a fake Trent Tucker autograph.
- I met with a couple of Singapore based attorneys and during a business meeting they needed something to talk about – thus they asked me what kind of sports I liked. I responded that I was quite a fan of the NBA. This is the point where I was informed by one of the attorneys that he caught several NBA games this year and was a huge fan of Derrick Rose. In fact he informed me that Derrick Rose was the best player in the league and far and away better than LeBron James. In lieu of causing an international incident and ending up in a Singapore jail I opted to change the subject…I’m still not sold it was the right move. The good news is for Derrick Rose though – he’s freaking huge in Singapore.
- ESPN International has a helluva range of programming. They cover badminton on Sportscenter, then show a Yankee game, talk about the Asian Youth Games, then show a random Sixers-Knicks playoff game from 1989. I will admit it was better than the movie station though – which played “The Kid and I” a total of 4 times while I was here. No not the Bruce Willis picture – “The Kid”, “The Kid and I” starring Tom Arnold as basically himself shooting a sequel to True Lies with a kid who has cerebal palsy. I won’t knock the kid with CP (who was actually quite charming) but the movie also stars Linda Hamilton, Shannon Elizabeth, Joe Montegna, wrestler Goldberg, and of course Shaq. You want me to describe how good it was? Let’s just say there is a non-James Cameron related reason that Linda Hamilton doesn’t work anymore. Also – TOM ARNOLD.
I’m back state-side Thursday at which point I’m sure Steve Kerr will have dealt Steve Nash to the Globetrotters for the draft rights to United States soccer goalie Tim Howard.
