As you may know from reading SoD, I’m a proud alum of Kansas State University. I’m pretty much a homer when it comes to my beloved Wildcats and can usually justify just about any move they make, no matter how bad it might look. Case in point: K-State hires Frank Martin as men’s basketball head coach. Although Martin had never been a head coach above the high school level, I approve of this move anyway and tack it up to the ‘Cats just staying on the cutting edge of coaching hires. But today? Today I just hang my head in shame.
Per ESPN.com – K-State is headed to court to challenge a “secret deal” between former AD Bob Krause (or Ron Krause if you ask the WWL) and ex-football head man Ron Prince. When Prince was fired on November 5th after 3 seasons at the helm, it was reported that his settlement figure was $1.2 million. At first glance, I thought it was solid work by Mr. Krause, not great but not bad. At least the guy who just got it handed to him 52-21 by in-state rival KU was gone. But that was not all (God, if only that was all). It appears that Bob Krause (or the BK Broiler as he’s affectionately known by a few in Manhattan) directly negotiated a separate arrangement with Prince and his attorney whereby Prince would be due $3.2 million in deferred compensation between 2015 and 2020. To make matters worse, though the agreement was reached in November, the K-State administration just discovered this last week. That my friends is incompetence at its highest level. How it is possible to complete a secret deal at a major Division I university, in the internet age, without the administration finding out for SIX MONTHS, I will never know. However one thing is for sure – this is without a doubt the worst secret deal struck since the T’Wolves decided Joe Smith was so good that they needed to cheat to keep him at a cost of 5 first round picks.
And here we sit again fellow Wildcat fans – egg on our faces on a national level. Help us Bill Snyder, you’re our only hope.
