In news that is equal on the shock scale to Brett Favre looking to un-retire, Manny Ramirez has been suspended 50 games for violating the Major League Baseball drug policy. This news brings a couple quick thoughts to mind (and yes I realize I’m jumping to conclusions):
- Guess it now makes sense why Manny has been lighting the NL on fire since his arrival in Los Angeles last August.
- If you honestly believe that Manny never used any performance enhancers while with the Red Sox…well I’ve got some WorldCom stock to sell you (and I’ll give you a great discount). I’m sure the Red Sox faithful will be furious at even the slightest indication that this may be true but come on…be a little realistic. We’re looking at you Bill Simmons.
- Manny Ramirez is INCREDIBLY, INCREDIBLY dumb. Use of performance enhancers has been THE big issue among Major League Baseball for years now. Yet, in spite of this, Manny continues to use? Either Ramirez has an absolutely staggering level of arrogance in thinking he wouldn’t be caught, or he is by far the stupidest human being on the face of the earth. Manny being Manny just won’t cut it here.
From a local standpoint, is there any chance this helps spur the D-Backs back into contention in the division? The pre-Ramirez 2008 Dodgers weren’t exactly blowing anyone away, thus I’d say its slightly (emphasis on the slightly) possible that Arizona can make a race of it. Will they though? Probably not, they really aren’t very good.
