Note: In my NBA Nightcap piece I made a brief mention to MTV’s Classic Rock & Jock series. While looking for a clip I decided there was no way I could limit all of you faithful readers to just ONE line on the matter.
Anyone who had a TV with cable in the early ’90’s likely remembers the greatness that was Rock & Jock Basketball and Softball. Single-handedly keeping both Bill Bellamy and Dan Cortese in work, this series brought us such classics as:
- The 25 and 50 point baskets – I still can’t watch an NBA game that is a blowout without mentioning the possibility of these shots changing the game
- Ken Griffey Jr. playing centerfield in a lawn chair
- Michael Rapaport perpetuating the stereotype that he is in some way funny and amusing
Shamefully there were only 2 quality Rock & Jock clips on YouTube (this should be a crime)
Gotta love the star power on the Aardvarks in this one: David Faustino, a young Keanu Reeves (likely still riding high off his Youngblood role), and whomever Pam Wright is. All coached by Sam Kinison. A Winning combo if I’ve ever seen one, and I’ve seen 4 of them. However you’ve got to wonder whether it was enough to overcome Tone Loc playing catcher on the Salamanders.
The following clip might not be of a specific game, but I live by few rules in life…and one of them is that any time you get a chance to work in a performance from Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, I do it.
Who doesn’t love a classic early 90’s camera shakin’ musical performance? Even a little pants dropping for the ladies from Mr. Mark. Just to recap: that guy, the one without the pants, became an Oscar-nominated actor. The Funky Bunch remains at large.
