You’d think we’d learn a lesson after being burnt by our Kiwi fan base, but…
Last week it was reported that Suns center Robin Lopez received a 2nd place vote for Rookie of the Year. Cute right? You’ve got to assume some media member got his Lopezes mixed up, as Robin’s twin brother Brook averaged 13 points and 8 boards for New Jersey this year.
Then just today it appears that Robin Lopez received one vote for the NBA’s All-Rookie First Team. Again, you’ve got to assume this was just a mistake, right?
For the record, the ROY award is voted on by the media while the All-Rookie teams are voted on by the coaches. That leaves us with one of two options:
(1) At least one coach and at least one media member are so neglectful in performing basic job functions that they couldn’t determine the difference between the names “Brook” and “Robin” (both beautiful girl’s names for what its worth) and the team names “New Jersey Nets” and “Phoenix Suns”. A frightening thought.
(2) At least one coach and one media member found Robin Lopez’s numbers of 3.1 PPG, 2.0 rebounds, and 22 DNP-CD’s so impressive that they decided he deserved to be honored with this award. He did score in double figures three times this year (Memphis, Chicago, Oklahoma City) but then didn’t play for the 2nd match-up against Chicago. Thus, is it possible that the vote came from Bull coach Vinny Del Negro who was so impressed with the one game that he assumed Lopez must have been injured for the other game, then just extrapolated similar numbers by Lopez against all teams?
Either way I’m a little frightened, but I’m going to have to go with neglect at its highest level. The other option means that people missed a whole season of this:
