I’ve been a Suns fan since my family moved to Phoenix in May of 1989. I still remember catching the ’89 Western Conference finals, blissfully not knowing that it would likely not get much better as a Suns fan. While being a fan hasn’t always been easy- I’ve been privy to a 20 year sentence of “this close” and “just missed it” (Richard Dumas’ run with the nose candy, Mario Elie blowing kisses, Steve Nash’s bleeding nose, and the infamous Stoudemire/Diaw suspensions jump to mind)- there has been one typical constant…the playoffs. 2009 marks just the third season of my Suns fan life that they’ve missed the playoffs.
For the sake of comparison: in the same period the Celtics have missed the playoffs 9 times. Though the fact that they’re currently working on chasing title #18 probably softens the blow from the Dino Radja era.
While it is always fun to get behind a title-contending team, this playoff absence has taught me one thing: I’d rather be watching anything with “Phoenix” on the front of the jersey than nothing at all. Give me Rex Chapman, Wes Person and the scrappy ’97 team. Hell, even give me Backcourt 2000…I’ll take it.
So enjoy the 2009 playoffs Spurs fans. You won’t have the Suns to kick around this year.
Just for the hell of it, lets all enjoy Rex Chapman for 3 (as shot by Abe Zapruder):
